Heuchera 'Fire Chief'®

Heuchera 'Fire Chief'®

2L Pot

Plant Highlights: Vibrant red foliage through the seasons • Evergreen leaves for year-round interest • Compact, mounding habit • Bicoloured pink and white summer flowers • Ideal for borders and containers

Overview

Heuchera 'Fire Chief'® is an evergreen herbaceous perennial grown for its bold, richly coloured foliage. The rounded leaves emerge bright red and retain rich wine-red to vibrant red tones throughout the year, bringing strong colour and contrast to borders, woodland-style planting and patio containers.

In late spring and summer, dark red flower stems rise above the foliage carrying delicate bicoloured pink and white flowers, creating a light, airy display while allowing the colourful foliage to remain the main feature. Its compact, clump-forming habit makes it easy to incorporate into a wide range of planting schemes. At maturity, the foliage forms a mound approximately 20–25cm high, with flower stems reaching up to 45cm, and a spread of around 35–40cm.

Why We Love It

  • Rich red foliage provides year-round colour and contrast.
  • Elegant pink and white flowers add movement above the foliage.
  • Compact habit is perfect for borders, edging and containers.
  • Evergreen leaves maintain garden interest through every season.
  • Attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade for the richest foliage colour, although it also grows well in full sun provided the soil remains evenly moist. Shelter from excessively hot, drying conditions where possible.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist while plants establish. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in containers, but avoid waterlogged conditions.

Soil

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Good drainage is especially important during winter.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy in Ireland and the UK. Remove any damaged or weathered leaves in spring as fresh growth emerges, and apply a mulch around the plant to help conserve moisture.

Maintenance

Remove spent flower stems after flowering to keep plants tidy and encourage vigorous growth. Divide mature clumps every few years if required to maintain health and vigour.
