  • Airy creamy-white flowers in summer
  • Ideal for borders, containers and woodland planting
  • Excellent contrast plant for mixed perennial displays

Overview

Heuchera 'Marmalade' is an outstanding evergreen perennial grown for its richly coloured foliage, which blends warm shades of amber, caramel, copper and cinnamon with attractive rosy-purple undersides. The deeply lobed leaves provide year-round colour and texture, making this variety a valuable feature long after many flowering plants have faded.

In late spring and summer, elegant stems of small creamy-white flowers rise above the colourful foliage, adding height and attracting pollinating insects. Its compact, mound-forming habit makes it equally suited to shaded borders, woodland gardens and decorative patio containers.

Why We Love It

  • Warm foliage tones provide year-round garden interest.
  • Evergreen habit adds lasting colour and structure.
  • Creamy flowers attract bees and other pollinators.
  • Compact size makes it ideal for containers and smaller spaces.
  • Beautiful foliage complements Hostas, ferns and spring bulbs.

Growing Guide

Position

Grow in partial shade for the richest foliage colour, although plants will also perform well in full sun if the soil remains consistently moist. A little afternoon shade is beneficial in warmer locations.

Watering

Water regularly during establishment and throughout prolonged dry periods. Plants grown in containers should be checked frequently, keeping the compost evenly moist without becoming waterlogged.

Soil

Plant in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Good drainage is particularly important during wet Irish winters.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy in most Irish gardens. Remove any damaged or tired foliage in late winter before fresh growth begins, and avoid allowing the crown to remain in saturated soil during prolonged wet weather.

Routine Care

Remove faded flower stems after blooming and tidy older leaves in spring. Divide mature clumps every few years to maintain healthy growth and vigorous foliage.

Perfect For

  • Front of mixed borders.
  • Woodland and shade gardens.
  • Patio pots and decorative containers.
  • Underplanting shrubs and small trees.
  • Adding warm foliage contrast to perennial planting schemes.

Good to Know

The foliage colour changes subtly throughout the seasons, with fresh growth often showing brighter amber and copper tones before maturing into deeper caramel shades, giving the plant interest for much of the year.
