Plant Highlights: Self-clinging climbing hydrangea • Creamy-white lacecap summer flowers • Ideal for shaded walls and fences • Peeling cinnamon-brown bark provides winter interest

Overview

Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris, commonly known as the Climbing Hydrangea, is a slow-to-establish but long-lived deciduous climber, valued for its ability to thrive in shaded areas where many other climbers struggle. In early to mid-summer, it produces large, flattened clusters of creamy-white lacecap flowers that stand out against rich green foliage. Using aerial rootlets, it clings naturally to walls, fences and tree trunks without needing wires or trellises, making it an excellent choice for covering north- or east-facing walls. As the plant matures, its peeling cinnamon-brown bark adds attractive winter interest.

Why We Love It

This self-clinging climber thrives in shaded positions where other plants struggle, offering graceful summer blooms and winter interest with its distinctive peeling bark.
