Hydrangea arborescens 'Hayes Starburst'

3L Pot

Plant Highlights: Unique double white flower heads • Long summer flowering season • Strong, bushy deciduous habit • Excellent for borders and woodland gardens • Beautiful for fresh and dried flower arrangements

Overview

Hydrangea arborescens 'Hayes Starburst' is a distinctive deciduous hydrangea, prized for its unusual fully double white flowers. The blooms open from soft green buds before developing into rounded clusters of star-shaped double florets, creating a textured display that continues through summer and into early autumn.

Its naturally bushy, rounded habit and fresh green foliage make it an excellent choice for mixed shrub borders, woodland gardens and sheltered courtyards. Growing to approximately 1–1.2m in height and spread, it offers long-lasting ornamental interest and produces flowers that are equally attractive fresh or dried.

Why We Love It

  • Distinctive double, star-shaped blooms unlike most other hydrangeas.
  • Long flowering season provides colour throughout summer.
  • Bushy habit is well suited to borders and woodland-style planting.
  • Excellent flowers for cutting and drying.
  • Elegant combination of textured blooms and fresh green foliage.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. In sunnier positions, ensure the soil remains consistently moist during dry weather.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry spells. Applying a layer of organic mulch each spring helps conserve soil moisture and keeps the roots cool.

Soil

Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil with good drainage. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely during the growing season.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy in Ireland and the UK (RHS H5–H6). Established plants tolerate winter well. Leave the old flower heads in place over winter if desired for additional seasonal interest, then prune before new growth begins in spring.

Pruning

As this hydrangea flowers on the current season's growth, prune in late winter or early spring by removing weak stems and cutting back the previous year's growth to encourage vigorous new shoots and abundant flowering.

Perfect For

  • Mixed shrub borders.
  • Cottage gardens.
  • Woodland gardens.
  • Specimen planting.
  • Cut and dried flower gardens.

Good to Know

The fully double flowers of Hydrangea arborescens 'Hayes Starburst' are primarily ornamental. As the blooms consist of sterile double florets, they provide little or no nectar or pollen compared with single-flowered hydrangea varieties.
