Overview

Hydrangea French Bolero® Blue is a compact deciduous shrub selected for its distinctive flowering habit and neat, well-branched growth. Throughout summer, elegant blue lacecap flower heads are produced along the entire length of each stem, creating a unique garland-like display above fresh green foliage and providing weeks of colour in borders, patios and sheltered gardens.

Its naturally compact, rounded habit makes it particularly well suited to smaller gardens and container planting. The long-lasting blooms are equally attractive fresh or dried, while their unusual arrangement gives the plant a striking appearance unlike traditional mophead hydrangeas. At maturity it typically reaches around 1m in height and spread.

Plant Details

Blue flower colour is best maintained in acidic soil or ericaceous compost. In neutral or alkaline soils, flowers may develop purple or pink tones.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade or in a position with morning sun and afternoon shade. It will also grow in full sun provided the soil remains consistently moist.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season, particularly during warm, dry weather and when grown in containers. Avoid allowing the soil or compost to dry out completely.

Soil

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. To maintain the richest blue flower colour, plant in acidic soil or use ericaceous compost in containers. Apply an organic mulch in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil structure.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy in Ireland and the UK. Leave the faded flower heads in place over winter to help protect the developing buds, removing them in late winter or early spring.

Pruning

Remove faded flower heads in late winter or early spring, cutting back to a healthy pair of buds. Remove any dead or weak stems to maintain a strong framework while preserving the flowering stems.
