About this product

Hydrangea macrophylla Black Diamonds®

Hydrangea macrophylla Black Diamonds® Series

5 Litre Pot

Plant Highlights: Dramatic dark foliage • Large mophead flowers • Excellent for borders and containers • Long-lasting summer colour • Striking foliage contrast

Overview

The Black Diamonds® Hydrangea Series combines richly coloured flower heads with distinctive deep purple to near-black foliage, creating a bold display that stands out from traditional hydrangeas. The dark leaves provide a dramatic backdrop to the large rounded blooms, making this shrub an eye-catching feature in borders, patios and decorative containers throughout the summer.

As a collection rather than a single named cultivar, flower colour varies within the Black Diamonds® Series. Depending on the individual plant, blooms may be shades of pink, red or deep rosy tones, all enhanced by the striking dark foliage. The combination of colourful flowers and richly coloured leaves provides interest over a long season and works beautifully in contemporary as well as traditional garden designs.

Why We Love It

  • Rich, dark foliage offers striking contrast throughout the growing season.
  • Large mophead flower heads provide weeks of summer colour.
  • Excellent as a feature shrub in borders or large patio containers.
  • Compact, bushy habit suits a wide range of garden styles.
  • Attractive foliage remains ornamental even before and after flowering.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade or a sunny position where the soil remains consistently moist. In warmer or more exposed gardens, some afternoon shade helps keep both foliage and flowers looking their best.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist while the shrub establishes and during prolonged dry spells. Hydrangeas appreciate consistent moisture, particularly when grown in containers, but should not be left sitting in waterlogged soil.

Soil

Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Incorporating organic matter before planting will help improve moisture retention while maintaining a healthy soil structure, particularly in Irish gardens.

Pruning

Remove spent flower heads in late winter or early spring, cutting back to a pair of healthy buds. At the same time, remove any dead or weak stems while leaving the main framework intact, as flowering takes place on stems formed during the previous growing season.

Perfect For

  • Feature planting in borders
  • Woodland-style gardens
  • Large patio containers
  • Contemporary planting schemes
  • Mixed shrub borders
