Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly known as mophead hydrangea, is a much-loved deciduous shrub grown for its generous, rounded flowerheads that brighten the garden from summer into early autumn. With lush green foliage and impressive blooms, it provides colour and structure in borders, woodland-style planting and large patio containers.

This product is supplied as a mixed selection, so flower colour and cultivar will vary. Depending on the variety, blooms may be shades of blue, pink, purple, red or white. Flower colour in some cultivars can also be influenced by soil conditions, particularly soil pH.

Growing Guide

Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Hydrangeas perform best where they receive morning sun or dappled shade, with protection from the hottest afternoon sun in exposed locations. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly while establishing and when grown in containers.

Apply a mulch in spring to help retain soil moisture. Remove faded flowerheads in late winter or early spring, cutting back to a healthy pair of buds. Avoid pruning hard, as many Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars flower on stems produced the previous year.
