Hydrangea macrophylla 'Raspberry Lemonade' – Mophead Hydrangea

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Raspberry Lemonade'

Supplied in a 5 Litre Proven Winners® Pot

Plant Highlights: Large raspberry-pink mophead flowers • Compact, bushy deciduous shrub • Long-lasting summer display • Ideal for borders and patio containers • Excellent for fresh and dried flower arrangements

Overview

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Raspberry Lemonade' is a compact deciduous shrub grown for its impressive mophead flower clusters in rich raspberry-pink tones. Flowering throughout summer, the large rounded blooms stand out against lush mid-green foliage, creating a vibrant display in borders, patio containers and sheltered garden spaces. As with many Hydrangea macrophylla varieties, flower colour intensity can vary depending on soil conditions, particularly soil pH.

Its naturally neat, rounded habit makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, courtyards and decorative pots, while the long-lasting flower heads are equally attractive when cut for fresh displays or dried for indoor arrangements.

Why We Love It

  • Large mophead blooms provide vibrant colour throughout summer.
  • Compact habit is ideal for smaller gardens and patio planting.
  • Long-lasting flowers are excellent for fresh and dried arrangements.
  • Lush green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the blooms.
  • Easy to combine with ferns, hostas and other shade-loving plants.

Growing Guide

Position

Grow in partial shade or full sun. A position with morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal, although plants will also perform well in sunnier locations provided the soil remains consistently moist.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods. Hydrangeas perform best in evenly moist soil, and container-grown plants should be checked frequently during warm weather as compost dries more quickly.

Soil

Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Apply a mulch in spring to help conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil condition.

Hardiness and Winter Care

This deciduous shrub is hardy in most Irish gardens. Leave the faded flower heads in place over winter, as they help protect developing flower buds from frost. In colder or more exposed gardens, newly planted shrubs benefit from additional winter protection.

Routine Care

'Hydrangea macrophylla* 'Raspberry Lemonade' flowers on stems produced during the previous growing season. In late winter or early spring, remove only dead, damaged or weak stems and cut back faded flower heads to the first healthy pair of buds. Avoid hard pruning, as this can reduce flowering for the following season.

Perfect For

  • Patio pots and decorative containers.
  • Cottage and woodland-style gardens.
  • Mixed shrub borders.
  • Sheltered courtyards.
  • Fresh and dried flower arrangements.

Good to Know

The 5 litre pot refers to the nursery container supplied and not the mature size of the shrub. Flower colour may vary from bright raspberry-pink to softer pink shades depending on soil pH, and plants flower on old wood, so careful pruning helps ensure a reliable display each summer.
