Overview

Hydrangea paniculata 'Wim's Red' is a deciduous shrub valued for its long season of interest. Large, upright flower panicles emerge creamy white in mid to late summer before gradually deepening through shades of pink to rich wine-red as the season progresses. The dark red stems enhance the display, while the foliage often develops attractive burgundy and red tones in autumn, extending its ornamental value well beyond flowering. Unlike many mophead hydrangeas, panicle hydrangeas flower on new season's growth, making them dependable bloomers after cold winters and straightforward to prune.

Why We Love It

We love 'Wim's Red' for its dramatic evolving flower color, rich autumn foliage, and robust hardiness in Irish gardens.

Growing Guide

Planting & Position Plant in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Performs well in full sun where soil remains consistently moist, although light afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter, drier locations.
Watering & Feeding Avoid allowing soil to dry out completely during prolonged dry spells, particularly while establishing or when grown in a container. Apply a mulch in spring to help retain soil moisture and feed with a balanced fertiliser as new growth begins.
Pruning Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Remove dead or weak stems and shorten the previous year's growth to a healthy pair of buds. Annual pruning encourages strong stems and large flower heads.
Wildlife & Winter Interest Fertile flower heads can attract pollinating insects, and dried blooms provide winter structure if left on the plant until spring.
