Ilex crenata 'Jenny'
Confirmed format: 4 litre potted pyramid (approx. 55cm supplied height)
Plant Highlights:
Dense evergreen foliage for year-round structure
Expertly clipped pyramid topiary
Excellent alternative to box (Buxus)
Suitable for sun or partial shade
Slow-growing and easy to maintain
Ilex crenata 'Jenny', commonly known as Japanese Holly, is a compact evergreen shrub with small, glossy, dark green leaves and a naturally dense branching habit. Unlike traditional hollies, the foliage is smooth rather than spiny, creating a refined, box-like appearance that is particularly well suited to clipped shapes and formal planting. Small white flowers may appear in late spring, although the foliage and architectural form are its main ornamental features.
Supplied already trained into a neat pyramid, this plant provides instant structure for entrances, patios and borders. It responds well to clipping, helping it retain its crisp outline with minimal maintenance. Its dense evergreen habit makes it an attractive feature throughout the year and a popular choice where a formal look is desired.
Provides year-round evergreen structure and colour.
Naturally dense growth clips cleanly into formal topiary.
An attractive alternative to traditional box planting.
Suitable for decorative containers or planting directly in the garden.
Holds its shape well with light, regular trimming.

Plant in full sun or partial shade. It is equally effective as a specimen topiary, in pairs beside doorways, or as part of a formal planting scheme.
Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, particularly plants growing in containers.
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Neutral to slightly acidic soils are preferred, while prolonged waterlogging or strongly alkaline, chalky soils should be avoided where possible.
Well suited to Irish conditions when planted in free-draining soil. Container-grown specimens may need occasional watering during dry winter periods, as evergreen foliage continues to lose moisture throughout the year.
Trim lightly once or twice during the growing season to maintain the pyramid shape. Remove any damaged or wayward shoots as required and feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring.
Formal entranceways and front gardens.
Matching pairs in decorative patio containers.
Architectural planting schemes.
Low evergreen structure within borders.
Contemporary or traditional gardens requiring year-round definition.
This cultivar is valued primarily for its dense evergreen foliage and topiary performance rather than its flowers. The supplied pyramid shape has been professionally trained and is best maintained with light, regular clipping. 'Jenny' is a male selection and does not produce berries.
