Overview

Laurus nobilis, commonly known as Bay Laurel or Sweet Bay, is a handsome evergreen shrub prized for its glossy, dark green, aromatic foliage and naturally dense, upright growth habit. Widely grown as both an ornamental feature and a culinary herb, it provides dependable year-round structure in the garden while producing leaves that can be harvested fresh or dried for cooking. In Ireland's mild climate, it performs well in sheltered positions with free-draining soil.

Why We Love It

Bay Laurel combines practical culinary value with timeless garden elegance. Its fragrant foliage stays lush all year, and its tidy habit clips easily into crisp formal shapes or ornamental topiary.

Watering Water regularly while establishing and during extended dry periods, especially when grown in containers.
Container Care Feed container-grown plants during the growing season and refresh the compost every few years to maintain healthy growth.
Harvesting Leaves can be picked throughout the year as required. Fresh leaves have a strong flavour, while dried leaves develop a slightly milder, more rounded aroma. Harvest little and often to encourage fresh growth.
