Overview

Laurus nobilis, commonly known as Bay Laurel, is a classic evergreen shrub valued for its glossy, aromatic leaves and naturally dense growth. Its elegant form makes it equally at home as a specimen plant, clipped topiary, or an attractive evergreen feature in borders and large patio containers. The richly scented leaves have long been appreciated for culinary use when harvested from untreated plants, while the handsome foliage provides year-round structure and colour in the garden.

Why We Love It

Bay Laurel brings timeless structure and versatility to outdoor spaces. It responds well to regular clipping, making it an excellent choice for formal gardens, topiary, and stylish contemporary patio containers.

Growing Guide

Planting & Position Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.
Watering Water regularly during the first growing season and continue to water container-grown plants during prolonged dry periods.
Feeding Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy new growth.
Winter Protection In colder or more exposed parts of Ireland, container-grown plants benefit from some protection during severe winter weather, while ensuring good drainage helps prevent root problems in wet conditions.
Pruning Can be pruned in late spring or summer to maintain its shape. Regular light trimming encourages dense, compact growth, making it particularly suitable for topiary and formal planting.
