Overview

Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote', commonly known as English Lavender, is one of the finest and most popular lavender cultivars, renowned for its richly coloured violet-purple flower spikes and intensely fragrant silver-grey foliage. Flowering from mid to late summer, it fills the garden with colour and perfume while attracting bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects.

Evergreen foliage provides attractive year-round structure, while its exceptional fragrance makes it a favourite for sensory planting and cut or dried flower arrangements.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a warm, sunny position where it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Good air circulation encourages healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season while establishing. Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells. Avoid excessive watering, particularly during winter.

Soil

Grow in free-draining soil. Lavender performs best in sandy, chalky or gravelly soils and dislikes heavy or waterlogged ground. For containers, use a free-draining compost with added horticultural grit.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy throughout Ireland. Winter wet is more likely to damage plants than cold temperatures, so excellent drainage is essential. Container-grown plants should also be protected from prolonged waterlogging.

Routine Care

Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape and help prevent the plant becoming woody. Remove spent flower stems and avoid cutting back into old wood that has little or no green growth.

  • Cottage gardens.

Good to Know

'Hidcote' is one of the best lavender varieties for drying, retaining much of its rich flower colour and fragrance after harvest. Its compact habit makes it particularly suitable for creating neat, informal edging along paths and borders.
