Overview
Lavandula stoechas 'Anouk' is a compact French lavender prized for its richly coloured flower heads topped with distinctive upright bracts that resemble butterfly wings. Flowering from spring into summer, it provides a long-lasting display of vibrant colour while the aromatic silver-green foliage offers year-round interest and fragrance.
Its naturally neat, bushy habit makes 'Anouk' particularly well suited to patio containers, gravel gardens and the front of sunny borders. The combination of fragrant foliage and colourful blooms brings texture and movement to the garden, pairing beautifully with Mediterranean-style planting and other sun-loving perennials.

Growing Guide
Position
Choose a sunny, sheltered position where the plant receives plenty of direct sunlight. 'Anouk' is ideal for warm borders, raised beds and containers with excellent drainage.
Watering
Water regularly while establishing. Once established, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Container-grown plants should be checked more frequently during warm weather, but avoid leaving them sitting in water.
Soil
Lavender performs best in free-draining soil. In heavier Irish soils, improve drainage with horticultural grit or grow in raised beds or containers to help plants come through wet winters successfully.
Pruning
Lightly trim after the main flush of flowers to encourage a neat, bushy shape and potential repeat flowering. Avoid cutting into old woody stems, as these may not produce new growth readily.
Perfect For
- Patio containers
- Gravel gardens
- Mediterranean-style planting
- Sunny borders
- Courtyard gardens
Wildlife Friendly
The nectar-rich flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, making 'Anouk' a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly planting.
Good to Know
French lavender is less tolerant of prolonged cold, wet winter conditions than English lavender. In exposed gardens or areas with heavy soil, planting in a sheltered, free-draining position or a container can help it perform well in Irish conditions.
