Plant Highlights: Fragrant evergreen foliage • Spikes of violet-purple flowers in summer • Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators • Ideal for borders, low hedging and containers • Drought tolerant once established
Overview
Lavandula angustifolia, commonly known as English Lavender, is a classic evergreen shrub prized for its fragrant silver-green foliage and elegant spikes of violet-purple flowers. Flowering through summer, it brings colour, scent and structure to borders, gravel gardens and patio containers, while its nectar-rich blooms are a favourite with bees and other pollinating insects.
Its naturally compact habit makes it equally suited to informal cottage gardens and more formal planting, where it can be clipped into neat low hedges or used to edge pathways.

Growing Guide
Plant in a sunny, open position with free-draining soil. Lavender performs best where the soil does not remain wet during winter, making good drainage especially important in Irish gardens. Water regularly while establishing, then only during prolonged dry spells once established.
Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a neat, compact shape, taking care not to cut into old, woody stems. Avoid heavy pruning, as mature woody growth may not regenerate readily.
Why We Love It
English Lavender is one of the most versatile shrubs for Irish gardens. Its fragrant foliage, long-lasting flowers and tidy habit make it an excellent choice for cottage gardens, Mediterranean-style planting, edging paths and filling patio pots with colour and scent. The flowers are also popular for cutting and drying.
Wildlife
The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, making lavender a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens throughout the summer.
