Plant in partial shade or dappled woodland conditions for the best foliage quality. In sunnier locations, ensure the soil remains evenly moist, particularly during warm weather.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, keep the soil evenly moist during prolonged dry spells, especially for container-grown plants.
Grow in fertile, organic-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Leucothoe performs best in acidic to neutral soils and benefits from an annual mulch of organic matter to conserve moisture and improve soil structure.
Suitable for Irish gardens when planted in free-draining soil. Protect container-grown plants from prolonged freezing conditions and avoid exposed sites with cold, drying winds.
Requires little pruning. Remove any dead, damaged or overcrowded stems in spring to maintain a healthy, balanced shape. Feed in spring with a fertiliser suitable for acid-loving plants if required.
