Leucothoe ‘Little Flames’ (Leucothoe axillaris) is an evergreen shrub admired for its vibrant, glossy foliage that emerges fiery red in spring before maturing to deep green. Compact yet vigorous, it forms a dense, arching habit that adds year-round color and texture to shaded garden areas. Its striking leaves provide continuous interest even when few other plants are in bloom.
Care Tips: Plant in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in partial to full shade. Keep soil consistently damp, especially during dry spells, and mulch to conserve moisture. Minimal pruning is needed—simply trim lightly after growth to maintain shape and encourage bushy foliage.
Best Location: Perfect for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as underplanting beneath trees and shrubs. Also well suited to containers in sheltered spots where its colorful leaves can be admired close up.
