Overview

Liriope muscari 'Big Blue', commonly known as Lilyturf, is a robust evergreen perennial that forms dense clumps of glossy, strap-shaped dark green foliage. Its neat, grass-like leaves provide year-round structure, making it an excellent choice for edging paths, underplanting shrubs and trees, or softening the front of borders.

From late summer into autumn, upright stems rise above the foliage carrying spikes of rich violet-purple flowers. These are followed by glossy black berries that extend the season of interest into winter. 'Big Blue' is especially valued for its ability to perform well in dry shade once established, while also thriving in sun where the soil remains reasonably moist.

Why We Love It

  • Evergreen foliage provides structure throughout the year.

  • Late-season flowers bring colour when many perennials are fading.

  • Reliable in difficult areas, including dry shade beneath established trees.

  • Forms attractive clumps that gradually expand over time.

  • Equally effective in borders, containers and mass planting.

Growing Guide

Position

Grow in full sun, partial shade or shade. It is particularly valuable beneath trees and shrubs where many perennials struggle, although it also performs well in brighter positions provided the soil does not become excessively dry during establishment.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season while plants establish. Once mature, 'Big Blue' is relatively tolerant of dry conditions, although prolonged drought may reduce flowering. Container-grown plants should be watered whenever the compost begins to dry.

Soil

Plant in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It adapts to a range of soil types provided drainage is good, and benefits from a mulch of organic matter in spring to conserve moisture.

Hardiness and Winter Care

A hardy evergreen perennial well suited to Irish gardens. The foliage remains attractive through winter, although older leaves can become weathered after prolonged cold.

Routine Care

In late winter or early spring, trim away old or damaged foliage before fresh growth begins. Divide congested clumps every few years to maintain vigour and create new plants if required.

Perfect For

  • Woodland gardens and shaded borders.

  • Underplanting beneath trees and shrubs.

  • Path edging and low evergreen ground cover.

  • Patio containers and courtyard gardens.

  • Contemporary and traditional planting schemes.

Good to Know

'Big Blue' spreads gradually by short rhizomes to form dense clumps, making it an excellent long-term ground cover without becoming invasive. The glossy black berries that follow flowering add subtle winter interest.
