About this product

Magnolia stellata

10 Litre Container – Approx. 80–90cm

Plant Highlights: Masses of star-shaped white flowers in early spring • Lightly fragrant blooms before the leaves emerge • Compact, slow-growing habit • A beautiful specimen for smaller gardens

Overview

Magnolia stellata, commonly known as Star Magnolia, is a compact deciduous shrub celebrated for its spectacular display of elegant, star-shaped white flowers in early spring. Flowering on bare branches before the foliage appears, it brings welcome colour and fragrance to the garden at a time when little else is in bloom.

Its naturally rounded habit and manageable size make it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, mixed shrub borders or as a focal point in a lawn or courtyard. The fresh green leaves emerge after flowering and provide an attractive backdrop throughout the growing season before turning yellow-brown in autumn.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds. A site away from early morning sun can help reduce damage if late frosts affect the opening flowers.

Watering

Keep well watered during the first growing season. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods, particularly in summer.

Soil

Magnolias thrive in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. They perform best in neutral to acidic conditions and dislike prolonged waterlogging or very chalky soils.

Maintenance

Pruning is rarely necessary. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches after flowering if required. Apply a mulch of organic matter in spring to help conserve moisture and improve soil structure, keeping it clear of the stem.
