Mahonia 'Magical Winterfern'

2 Litre Pot

Plant Highlights: Elegant fern-like evergreen foliage • Fragrant yellow flowers in late winter • Excellent for brightening shaded gardens • Blue berries may follow flowering when a suitable pollinator is nearby

Overview

Mahonia 'Magical Winterfern' is a distinctive evergreen shrub grown for its graceful, finely divided foliage, which has a soft, fern-like appearance rather than the spiny leaves associated with many traditional mahonias. Its arching habit and richly textured foliage provide year-round structure, making it an excellent choice for woodland-style planting and shaded borders.

From late winter into early spring, clusters of fragrant yellow flowers appear above the foliage, bringing welcome colour and a valuable source of nectar when few other shrubs are in bloom. If pollinated by a compatible male mahonia nearby, decorative deep blue berries may develop after flowering, adding further seasonal interest and attracting birds.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade or full shade in a sheltered position. It also tolerates more sun if the soil remains reliably moist.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, keep the soil evenly moist during extended dry periods, particularly in warmer weather.

Soil

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Incorporating organic matter at planting will help retain moisture while maintaining good drainage.

Maintenance

Prune lightly after flowering to remove any damaged or older stems and maintain a tidy shape. Mulching annually with compost or leaf mould will help keep the roots cool and the soil fertile.

  • Woodland gardens
