Overview

Monstera deliciosa, commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, is one of the most recognisable and popular indoor foliage plants. As it matures, its glossy green leaves develop the dramatic splits and natural perforations that give the plant its distinctive tropical appearance.

Young plants produce solid, heart-shaped leaves before developing their characteristic fenestrations with age. Naturally a climber, Monstera deliciosa benefits from a moss pole or sturdy support, which encourages larger leaves and more vigorous growth. Its bold foliage makes it an excellent focal point for living spaces, offices and bright indoor corners.

Growing Guide

Indoor Placement

Position in bright, indirect light for the best leaf development. It will tolerate moderate light, although growth may be slower and leaves may develop fewer splits. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Water when the top few centimetres of compost feel dry. Allow excess water to drain away and never leave the plant standing in water.

Humidity

Average household humidity is generally suitable, but higher humidity will encourage lush growth. Bright bathrooms or kitchens with natural light provide particularly favourable conditions.

Feeding

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth.

Good to Know

Providing a moss pole or similar support allows Monstera deliciosa to climb as it would in its natural rainforest habitat, encouraging larger and more deeply divided leaves over time. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to keep them free of dust and looking their best.
