Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' – supplied in a P23 (5-litre) pot
Plant Highlights: Year-round colourful foliage • Naturally compact, dense habit • Excellent for containers and borders • Attractive seasonal colour with minimal pruning
Overview
Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream' is a compact evergreen shrub grown for its outstanding foliage, which changes colour throughout the year. Fresh new growth emerges in bronze and copper shades before maturing to blue-green, while cooler autumn and winter temperatures bring vibrant red and orange tones.
With its naturally bushy, rounded habit, 'Gulf Stream' is ideal for adding reliable structure and seasonal interest to borders, courtyard gardens and patio containers. Unlike larger forms of heavenly bamboo, it remains compact, making it particularly suitable for smaller gardens.

Growing Guide
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. While it adapts to a range of garden conditions, the brightest foliage colours usually develop in sunnier positions. In Irish gardens, ensure good drainage to prevent prolonged winter wet around the roots.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, 'Gulf Stream' is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during extended dry spells, especially when grown in containers.
Seasonal Care
Very little pruning is required. Remove any dead, damaged or overcrowded stems in late winter or early spring to maintain the plant's natural shape. Avoid frequent clipping, as the shrub develops its best form without regular trimming.

- Patio containers
- Mixed shrub borders
- Courtyard gardens
- Small gardens

Good to Know
'Gulf Stream' is valued primarily for its foliage rather than its flowers or berries. In Ireland's climate, flowering and berry production may be limited, but the plant reliably delivers colourful foliage throughout the seasons.
