Grow in full sun or partial shade. The richest foliage colours usually develop where plants receive plenty of light while remaining sheltered from strong, cold winds.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods, especially plants grown in containers.
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Improve heavy soils with organic matter before planting and avoid areas prone to winter waterlogging.
Suitable for most Irish gardens when planted in free-draining soil. Newly planted or container-grown shrubs may benefit from some protection during prolonged periods of severe frost.
Requires very little pruning. Remove any damaged or dead stems as needed, and thin out older stems occasionally to encourage fresh new growth. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser.
