Grow in full sun or partial shade. Plants develop the best seasonal foliage colour with good light while benefiting from shelter from strong, cold winds.
Water regularly during the first growing season while the root system establishes. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods, particularly plants grown in containers.
Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Improve heavy soils with organic matter before planting to encourage healthy root development and avoid prolonged winter waterlogging.
Generally hardy in Irish gardens when grown in well-drained soil. Young or container-grown plants benefit from some protection during exceptionally severe winter weather.
Remove damaged or dead stems as required. Little routine pruning is needed, although older stems can be thinned occasionally to encourage fresh growth. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser.
