Nepeta 'Walker's Low'

Nepeta × faassenii 'Walker's Low'

2 Litre Pot

Plant Highlights: Long flowering • Lavender-blue flowers • Aromatic foliage • Pollinator friendly • Excellent for borders and containers

Overview

Few perennials provide such a long season of relaxed, natural-looking colour as Nepeta × faassenii 'Walker's Low'. From late spring into summer, and often continuing well into early autumn if trimmed after its first flush, this award-winning catmint produces masses of soft lavender-blue flower spikes above fragrant, silvery-green foliage. Its gently arching habit softens the edges of borders and paths, creating an informal cottage garden feel while blending beautifully with roses, ornamental grasses and other sun-loving perennials.

Its airy growth habit makes it equally effective spilling over retaining walls or brightening large patio containers. Once established, it copes well with warm, sunny positions, while the aromatic foliage adds texture and interest even when the plant is not in flower.

Why We Love It

  • Produces a long-lasting display of lavender-blue flowers through the warmer months.
  • Aromatic foliage adds colour and fragrance when brushed past.
  • A relaxed, mounding habit softens borders and pathways.
  • An excellent companion for roses and other cottage garden favourites.
  • The nectar-rich flowers can attract bees and other pollinating insects when in bloom.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a sunny position where it receives plenty of direct light. Good air movement and open conditions help encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Watering

Water regularly while the plant is becoming established. Once rooted, check the soil during prolonged dry spells, particularly in containers, and water when needed rather than on a fixed schedule.

Soil

Thrives in fertile, free-draining soil. Good drainage is especially important in heavier Irish soils, where improving the planting area with organic matter and grit can help prevent winter wet around the roots.

Routine Care

Shear back faded flower stems after the main flush of bloom to encourage fresh foliage and, in favourable conditions, a second display of flowers later in the season. Cut back old growth in early spring as new shoots begin to emerge.

Perfect For

  • Cottage-style planting schemes
  • Sunny borders
  • Patio pots and large containers
  • Gravel and wildlife-friendly gardens
  • Planting alongside roses and ornamental grasses

Wildlife Friendly

The nectar-rich flowers can attract bees and other pollinating insects throughout the flowering season, making 'Walker's Low' a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly planting.

Good to Know

Despite its cultivar name, 'Walker's Low' is not especially low-growing. It typically forms a broad, gently mounding clump rather than a compact ground cover, making it ideal for weaving through mixed perennial borders.
