Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a sunny, sheltered position where the tree receives as much direct sunlight as possible. It performs particularly well against a warm wall or in a sheltered courtyard, making it well suited to many Irish patios and urban gardens.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry spells. Container-grown olive trees should be checked more frequently, allowing excess water to drain away freely rather than leaving the roots in saturated compost.

Soil

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Excellent drainage is particularly important in Ireland's wetter winters. If planting in heavy soil, improve drainage before planting or grow in a large container with a free-draining compost.

Pruning

Light pruning in late spring or summer helps maintain the rounded canopy and remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches. Remove any shoots that appear along the stem below the crown to preserve the standard form.
