Overview

Opuntia, commonly known as the Prickly Pear Cactus, is a distinctive cactus recognised for its flattened, paddle-shaped stems that create a bold architectural display. This compact specimen is ideal for sunny windowsills, desks and shelves, bringing sculptural interest to modern interiors.

As a group, Opuntia species are exceptionally well adapted to dry conditions and require very little routine care once established. Given plenty of light and careful watering, they make long-lived and rewarding houseplants.

Indoor Placement

Position in the brightest location available, ideally a south- or west-facing windowsill where it can receive several hours of direct sunshine each day. It is also well suited to conservatories and other bright indoor spaces with good ventilation.

Avoid humid environments and protect from prolonged cold.

Growing Guide

Water thoroughly only when the compost has dried out completely. Reduce watering significantly during autumn and winter, when growth naturally slows. Always use a pot with good drainage and avoid leaving the plant standing in water.

Feed occasionally during spring and summer with a cactus fertiliser to encourage healthy growth.

Good to Know

Many Opuntia species are armed with both larger spines and tiny, barbed bristles known as glochids, which can detach easily. Handle the plant carefully and keep it out of reach of children and pets where accidental contact is likely.
