Opuntia microdasys var. pallida

17cm Pot

Plant Highlights: Soft pale-yellow glochids • Distinctive paddle-shaped stems • Architectural desert cactus • Excellent for bright, sunny indoor spaces

Overview

Opuntia microdasys var. pallida, often known as the Bunny Ears Cactus, is a distinctive cactus valued for its flattened, oval pads covered in evenly spaced clusters of soft-looking pale yellow glochids. These tiny barbed bristles give the plant its velvety appearance and create an eye-catching sculptural display throughout the year.

Its naturally branching habit develops into an attractive specimen over time, making it an excellent choice for sunny windowsills, conservatories and bright living spaces. Like other desert cacti, it thrives with minimal attention provided it receives plenty of light and free-draining conditions.

Indoor Placement

This cactus performs best in the brightest areas of the home, including:

  • South or west-facing windows
  • Conservatories
  • Bright living rooms

Avoid placing it in dimly lit areas, where growth may become weak and stretched.

Growing Guide

Watering

Allow the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Water sparingly during the growing season and reduce watering significantly during winter.

Humidity

Average household humidity is ideal. This cactus prefers dry air and does not require misting.

Feeding

Apply a cactus fertiliser occasionally during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing.

Maintenance

Very little maintenance is required. Repot only when necessary using a free-draining cactus compost. Handle with care, as the tiny glochids detach easily and can irritate the skin.

Why We Love It

  • The pale golden glochids give this cactus a unique, soft-looking appearance.
  • Its sculptural form adds character to contemporary interiors.
  • Requires very little watering once established.
  • A long-lived houseplant that becomes increasingly impressive with age.

Good to Know

Although the glochids appear soft, they are tiny barbed bristles that can easily become embedded in the skin. Position the plant where it is unlikely to be brushed against, especially in homes with children or curious pets.
