Overview

This mixed selection of Parthenocissus includes vigorous deciduous climbers such as Virginia Creeper and Boston Ivy. As this is a mixed assortment, the exact species supplied will vary, but all share lush green foliage through spring and summer before developing outstanding autumn displays in brilliant shades of crimson, scarlet, orange and purple.

They also make excellent ground cover on banks and slopes where a vigorous, low-maintenance plant is required.

Growing Guide

Position

Grow in full sun, partial shade or shade. The brightest autumn foliage colour is usually achieved in sunnier positions. Plant beside a sturdy wall, fence, pergola or other permanent structure where the plant has room to develop.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season while establishing. Once established in open ground, plants generally require additional watering only during prolonged dry spells.

Soil

Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. These climbers are adaptable to a wide range of soil types provided they do not remain persistently waterlogged.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy throughout Ireland. The foliage is deciduous, dropping in winter before fresh growth appears in spring.

Routine Care

Prune annually during late autumn or winter to control growth and keep stems clear of gutters, roof tiles, windows and other structures. Remove unwanted shoots promptly to maintain the desired shape and coverage.

Perfect For

  • Covering brick and stone walls.

  • Fences and boundary screening.

  • Pergolas and large garden structures.

  • Banks and slopes as vigorous ground cover.
