Overview

Philadelphus 'Virginal' is a well-loved Mock Orange cultivar, prized for its abundant clusters of large, double white flowers and their rich, sweet fragrance. Flowering from late spring into early summer, it creates an impressive seasonal display while filling the garden with perfume, making it an excellent choice for planting near patios, pathways or seating areas.

Growing Guide

Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. While adaptable to most garden soils, it performs best where the soil retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged during winter.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it is generally tolerant of short dry periods, although flowering is best when plants do not experience prolonged drought. Applying organic mulch in spring helps conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.

Pruning

Prune soon after flowering by removing a proportion of the oldest stems at the base and lightly shaping if required. This encourages vigorous new growth, which carries the following year's flowers.

Wildlife

The fragrant flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects during the flowering season, making this shrub a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
