Overview

Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' is an elegant tropical fern grown for its uniquely coloured blue-green fronds and relaxed, arching habit. The deeply lobed, softly textured leaves have a glaucous blue-grey tint that sets this fern apart from more traditional houseplant ferns, bringing cool colour and gentle movement to indoor spaces throughout the year.

Growing Guide

Light

Place in bright, indirect light or light shade. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds and reduce their distinctive blue-green colouring.

Watering

Keep the compost evenly moist, allowing only the surface to begin drying before watering again. Never allow the root ball to dry out completely, and avoid leaving the pot standing in water.

Compost

Grow in a free-draining, moisture-retentive houseplant compost in a container with good drainage to maintain healthy roots.

Humidity and Temperature

Higher humidity encourages lush, healthy fronds. Bright bathrooms and kitchens with natural light are ideal, or increase humidity with a pebble tray if indoor air becomes dry. Maintain warm indoor temperatures and protect the plant from cold draughts.

Feeding

Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength once a month during spring and summer. Feeding is generally unnecessary during autumn and winter.

Routine Care

Remove old or damaged fronds at the base to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. Repot only when the plant becomes congested, using fresh houseplant compost.

Good to Know
