About this product

Phlox subulata Mix

Phlox subulata Mix

P11 nursery pot • Supplied approximately 20cm tall

Plant Highlights: Colourful spring display • Evergreen carpet-forming foliage • Excellent ground cover • Ideal for rockeries and walls • Pollinator-friendly flowers

Overview

Phlox subulata Mix, commonly known as Moss Phlox, is a colourful selection of low-growing alpine perennials that create a dense carpet of vibrant flowers during spring. The evergreen, needle-like foliage forms neat mats throughout the year, while masses of blooms in shades of white, pink, rose and purple bring striking seasonal colour to sunny gardens. As this is a mixed selection, the flower colour of the plant supplied will vary.

With its spreading, cushion-forming habit, Moss Phlox is an excellent choice for softening the edges of paths, spilling over retaining walls, filling gaps between paving or providing reliable ground cover on slopes and rockeries. Its compact growth and preference for free-draining soil also make it well suited to containers, raised beds and alpine displays.

Why We Love It

  • Produces a vibrant carpet of flowers throughout spring.
  • Evergreen foliage provides year-round texture and ground cover.
  • Excellent for cascading over walls, edging paths and filling sunny spaces.
  • Nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other early-season pollinators.
  • Low-maintenance once established in well-drained soil.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a sunny position where it receives plenty of direct sunlight. It performs best on rockeries, slopes, raised beds and gravel gardens where drainage is excellent.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season while establishing. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant and generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells or when grown in containers.

Soil

Grow in free-draining soil with moderate fertility. Avoid heavy, poorly drained ground, particularly during winter, as excess moisture can damage the plants.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy in most Irish gardens when planted in well-drained soil. Winter wet is more damaging than cold, so avoid planting in areas that remain waterlogged.

Routine Care

Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a neat, compact cushion and encourage fresh evergreen growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems as required.

Perfect For

  • Rock gardens and alpine beds.
  • Gravel gardens and dry, sunny borders.
  • Cascading over walls and raised beds.
  • Edging paths and paving.
  • Containers and troughs with excellent drainage.

Good to Know

This is a mixed selection, so flower colour will vary between plants. Individual specimens may bloom in shades of white, pink, rose or purple, while all share the same compact habit and growing requirements.
