Plant Highlights: Bright golden-yellow canes with green striping • Evergreen foliage • Fast-growing architectural bamboo • Excellent screening plant • Striking year-round garden feature
Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' is a vigorous evergreen bamboo renowned for its spectacular golden-yellow canes, often marked with contrasting green stripes. As the canes mature, their vivid colouring becomes even more pronounced, creating an eye-catching architectural feature throughout the year. Fine, bright green foliage adds movement and texture, making this one of the most ornamental hardy bamboos for Irish gardens.
Its upright, fast-growing habit makes it an excellent choice for creating natural screens, shelter belts and dramatic specimen planting. It is equally effective in contemporary, Japanese-inspired and larger garden settings, where its colourful stems can be fully appreciated.

Plant in full sun or partial shade. Sunny conditions encourage the strongest cane colour, while partial shade is also well tolerated.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in light soils or when grown in containers.
Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Avoid prolonged waterlogging but do not allow the soil to dry out completely for extended periods.
Fully hardy throughout Ireland and retains its foliage year-round. Apply an organic mulch in spring to conserve moisture and encourage vigorous growth.
Remove older or unwanted canes at ground level to maintain an open, attractive clump and highlight the colourful stems. As this is a running bamboo, install a suitable rhizome barrier or plant in a contained area if you wish to limit its spread.
Unlike clump-forming bamboos, Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' spreads by underground rhizomes. Installing a rhizome barrier at planting time, or growing it within a contained space, helps keep the plant manageable while allowing it to develop into a striking long-term feature.
