Phyllostachys aurea
18L pot • Supplied approximately 200cm tall
Plant Highlights: Elegant golden-green canes • Evergreen foliage • Fast-growing screening bamboo • Architectural upright habit • Excellent for privacy and contemporary gardens
Phyllostachys aurea, commonly known as Golden Bamboo, is a vigorous evergreen bamboo valued for its upright growth, graceful narrow foliage and distinctive canes, which mature from green to rich golden-yellow in sunny positions. It creates an immediate architectural statement while providing year-round movement and texture in the garden.
Its tall, dense habit makes it an excellent choice for creating living screens, shelter from wind and attractive boundary planting. It also works well as a dramatic specimen or in large containers where its growth can be more easily managed.

Plant in full sun or partial shade. Sunny conditions encourage the richest golden cane colour, while partial shade is also well tolerated.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, continue watering during prolonged dry periods, particularly in lighter soils or containers.
Grow in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Fully hardy throughout Ireland and retains its foliage year-round. Apply a spring mulch to help conserve soil moisture and encourage healthy growth.
Remove older or unwanted canes at ground level to keep the clump looking fresh and to showcase the colourful stems. As this is a running bamboo, install a suitable rhizome barrier or grow it in a large contained area if you wish to limit its spread.
Unlike clump-forming bamboos such as Fargesia, Phyllostachys aurea spreads by underground rhizomes. Planning for this at planting time with a rhizome barrier or suitable containment makes it an excellent long-term garden feature.
