Pieris japonica 'Little Heath'

Approx. 50–60cm

Plant Highlights: Cream-edged evergreen foliage • Bright pink-red new growth • Compact, slow-growing habit • Ideal for containers, woodland gardens and acid-loving borders

Overview

Pieris japonica 'Little Heath' is a compact evergreen shrub grown as much for its attractive foliage as its elegant spring flowers. The small, dark green leaves are finely edged with creamy white throughout the year, while fresh spring growth emerges in shades of pink to rich red before gradually maturing. In spring, clusters of delicate white, bell-shaped flowers hang gracefully from the branches, adding another season of interest.

Supplied at approximately 50–60cm tall, this naturally neat variety is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, patio containers and woodland-style planting. Its slow-growing habit makes it easy to maintain while providing year-round structure and colour.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade or full sun in a sheltered location. Protection from cold, drying winds helps preserve the quality of the young spring growth.

Soil

For best results, grow in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. It is also well suited to containers filled with ericaceous compost.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment. Once established, water during extended dry periods, paying particular attention to container-grown plants.

Seasonal Care

Pruning is rarely required. If needed, lightly shape the plant after flowering and remove any dead or damaged stems. Deadheading spent flower clusters will help keep the shrub looking tidy.
