Pieris japonica 'Mountain Fire'

1 Litre Pot

Plant Highlights: Brilliant fiery-red spring foliage • Elegant white bell-shaped flowers • Evergreen year-round structure • Excellent for acid-loving borders and containers

Overview

Pieris japonica 'Mountain Fire' is one of the best-known Japanese pieris cultivars, prized for its vivid flush of brilliant red young foliage each spring. As the new leaves mature, they gradually turn glossy deep green, providing lasting evergreen structure throughout the year. In early to mid spring, graceful clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers hang beneath the branches, creating an attractive contrast against the colourful foliage.

Supplied in a 1-litre pot, this young shrub is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, mixed shrub borders and patio containers. It grows best in acidic conditions and rewards with reliable year-round interest.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade or full sun in a sheltered location. Protection from cold, drying winds will help preserve the quality of the colourful new spring growth.

Soil

Grow in moist, well-drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Where garden soils are neutral or alkaline, use ericaceous compost in containers or raised beds.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment. Once established, water during extended dry periods, particularly if grown in a container.

Seasonal Care

Pieris requires very little pruning. Remove spent flower trusses after flowering if desired and lightly shape the plant only when necessary. Apply an ericaceous mulch in spring to help conserve moisture and maintain soil acidity.
