Pieris japonica 'Ralto Rose' is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its colourful flushes of rose-pink new foliage and elegant spring flowers. Growing Guide

Position

Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun, avoiding hot afternoon sun in exposed locations. It thrives in sheltered woodland-style settings.

Watering

Water regularly while the shrub establishes and during prolonged dry periods, particularly when grown in containers. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.

Soil

Plant in moist, well-drained acidic soil enriched with organic matter. If your garden has alkaline soil, grow it in a container using ericaceous compost.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy throughout Ireland and the UK (RHS H5). Apply an annual mulch of leaf mould or ericaceous compost to help retain moisture and protect the shallow root system. Shelter young plants from cold, drying winds where possible.

Maintenance

Very little pruning is required. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches after flowering if needed. Spent flower trusses can also be removed to keep the plant tidy, although this is largely cosmetic.
