Growing Guide

Position

Plant in partial shade or a sheltered sunny position. Protect from cold, drying winds and avoid exposed sites. A woodland setting or an area with dappled shade is ideal.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Keep the soil evenly moist during dry weather, particularly for young plants and container-grown specimens.

Soil

Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained acidic soil. Avoid alkaline or chalky soils. Mulching annually with organic matter suitable for ericaceous plants helps conserve moisture and improve soil conditions.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Generally hardy in Irish gardens when planted in well-drained acidic soil. Protect young container-grown plants during prolonged periods of severe frost and avoid waterlogged conditions during winter.

Routine Care

Requires very little pruning. Remove dead or damaged growth after flowering if needed and feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants to encourage healthy foliage and flowering.

Perfect For

  • Woodland and shade gardens.

  • Acid-loving planting schemes.

  • Mixed shrub borders.

  • Decorative patio containers.

  • Combining with Camellias, Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Leucothoe.
