Overview
Pinus mugo 'Carstens Wintergold' is a compact, slow-growing evergreen mountain pine prized for its remarkable seasonal foliage colour. During spring and summer, its short needles are fresh green before transforming to rich golden-yellow as temperatures fall, providing outstanding colour throughout autumn and winter when many plants are dormant.
Its naturally dense, rounded habit requires very little maintenance, making it an excellent specimen for smaller gardens, gravel gardens, rockeries and large containers. The evergreen foliage provides structure all year, while the dramatic winter colour makes it a standout feature in the landscape.
Why We Love It
- Brilliant golden-yellow winter foliage adds seasonal interest.
- Dense evergreen habit provides year-round structure.

Growing Guide
Position
Plant in full sun for the strongest winter colour and healthiest compact growth.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a healthy root system. Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods, particularly for container-grown plants.
Soil
Grow in well-drained soil. It performs well in sandy, gravelly and moderately fertile soils but dislikes prolonged waterlogging.
Hardiness and Winter Care
Fully hardy throughout Ireland and well suited to cold winter conditions. No routine winter protection is required once established.
Routine Care
Very little pruning is needed. Remove any damaged or dead branches as required. If size control is necessary, lightly shorten the soft new shoots ("candles") in late spring without cutting back into older wood.
Perfect For
- Rock gardens.
- Gravel gardens.
- Alpine planting.
- Large patio containers.
- Mixed evergreen borders.
- Contemporary and low-maintenance gardens.
Good to Know
The supplied height of approximately 82cm reflects the plant at the time of sale. The vivid golden winter colour develops most intensely in full sun and colder weather before the foliage returns to green with spring growth.
