Overview

Pinus 'Marie Bregéon' PBR is a distinctive slow-growing evergreen conifer, prized for its naturally dense, rounded habit and attractive light green needles. In this elegant standard form, the compact head is elevated on a clear stem, creating a striking architectural feature that provides year-round structure without requiring regular shaping.

Originally bred by Henri Brégeon, this protected cultivar is valued for its restrained growth and naturally symmetrical form. It is particularly well suited to contemporary gardens, courtyards, terraces and decorative containers, where it provides evergreen interest throughout the seasons.

Why We Love It

  • Naturally forms a dense rounded crown with little or no pruning.
  • Evergreen needles provide year-round colour and structure.
  • Standard form creates an elegant architectural focal point.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in full sun for the healthiest growth and best foliage colour. Suitable for both sheltered and reasonably exposed gardens where drainage is good.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the root system. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods, particularly if grown in a container.

Soil

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid sites that remain waterlogged during winter, as conifers perform best with reliable drainage.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Fully hardy in Ireland. Apply an organic mulch around the base in spring to help conserve soil moisture, taking care not to cover the trunk.

Routine Care

Very little pruning is required. Remove only any damaged growth or occasional shoots that spoil the rounded outline. The cultivar naturally maintains its compact shape without regular clipping.

Perfect For

  • Feature containers.
  • Courtyard and patio gardens.
  • Rock and gravel gardens.
  • Contemporary landscapes.
  • Small gardens requiring year-round structure.

Good to Know

The supplied height of approximately 110cm refers to the overall height of the standard at the time of sale. The clear stem remains at roughly this height, while future growth occurs mainly within the compact rounded head, which develops slowly over many years.
