Overview

Prunus domestica 'Hauszwetsche' is a traditional European plum, valued for its oval blue-purple fruit with firm, sweet, yellow flesh that separates easily from the stone. It is particularly prized for baking, jam-making and drying, while fully ripened fruit is also delicious eaten fresh. This long-established variety is known for its dependable cropping and performs well in cooler climates when planted in a sunny, sheltered position. Supplied in a 5 litre pot and organically grown, this deciduous fruit tree brings year-round interest. White blossom appears in spring before giving way to fruit that ripens from late summer into early autumn, while the blossom also provides an early nectar source for pollinating insects.

Why We Love It

'Hauszwetsche' is a classic European plum with exceptional versatility. Its richly flavoured fruit is equally at home in the fruit bowl, the kitchen or the preserving pan, while the attractive spring blossom and organically grown cultivation make it a rewarding addition to productive gardens.

Growing Guide

Position & Soil Plant in a warm, sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil.
Watering Regular watering during the establishment period will encourage strong growth, particularly during dry spells.
Mulching Mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil structure, keeping the mulch away from the trunk.
Pruning To reduce the risk of silver leaf disease, prune plum trees during the growing season rather than in winter.
Crop Thinning Established trees benefit from thinning exceptionally heavy crops to improve fruit size and reduce stress on branches.
Harvesting Fruit is generally ready from late summer into early autumn, when the plums have developed their full colour and begin to soften slightly.

Perfect For

  • Productive kitchen gardens and orchards
  • Fresh eating, baking, preserves and drying
  • Sunny, sheltered garden spots
  • Supporting pollinating insects in spring

Good to Know

  • The 5 litre pot refers to the container size at the time of sale and not the mature size of the tree.
  • 'Hauszwetsche' is self-fertile, so it can produce fruit without another plum nearby, although planting a compatible European plum variety can improve yields.
  • The spring blossom attracts bees and other pollinating insects, helping to support biodiversity while contributing to good fruit set.
  • Prune during the growing season rather than in winter to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease.
