About this product

Sarracenia × farnhamii supplied in a 12 cm nursery pot.

Plant Highlights: Upright insect-catching pitchers • White markings with red-purple veining • Requires bright light and mineral-free water • Needs a cool winter dormancy

Overview

Sarracenia × farnhamii is a naturally occurring North American pitcher plant hybrid between Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia rubra. It forms upright tubular leaves marked with white areas and red to purple veining.

The pitchers are modified leaves that attract and trap insects. This plant is best suited to a very bright windowsill, cool conservatory or similarly bright position where its need for strong light and a winter rest can be met.

Foliage Upright pitchers with white markings and red-purple veining

Watering Keep consistently moist with rainwater or deionised water
Growing Medium Nutrient-poor carnivorous plant compost
Mature Height 30–45 cm
Mature Spread 20–30 cm

Growing Guide

Place in the brightest position available. During active growth, stand the pot in a shallow tray of rainwater or deionised water so the compost remains consistently moist. Do not use ordinary tap water where it contains dissolved minerals, and do not apply standard houseplant fertiliser.

Grow only in a nutrient-poor compost formulated for carnivorous plants. There is no need to place insects in the pitchers or feed the plant manually.

Seasonal Care

This plant needs a cool winter dormancy. Growth slows naturally and some pitchers may die back. Keep the compost damp rather than deeply waterlogged, and remove old pitchers in late winter before fresh growth begins.
