About this product

Skimmia Gold Series – Standard

Skimmia japonica Gold Series

24 cm pot • Standard form

Plant Highlights: Elegant standard specimen • Evergreen glossy foliage • Fragrant spring flowers • Ideal for patios and entrances • Year-round structure

Overview

Skimmia Gold Series, trained as a standard, is an elegant evergreen specimen that brings year-round structure to gardens, patios and entranceways. Raised on a clear stem with a neatly rounded crown, it provides a refined architectural shape while its glossy deep green foliage remains attractive throughout the seasons. In spring, clusters of small, creamy-white, fragrant flowers appear above the foliage, adding subtle colour and perfume.

Supplied in a 24 cm pot, this trained standard is ideal for decorative containers or as a focal point in borders and courtyard gardens. Depending on the individual cultivar within the Gold Series, ornamental berries may develop after flowering where suitable pollination occurs, extending seasonal interest. The evergreen foliage and formal shape make it equally at home in contemporary and traditional planting schemes.

Why We Love It

  • Trained standard form creates an instant focal point.
  • Glossy evergreen foliage provides colour and structure throughout the year.
  • Fragrant spring flowers bring early seasonal interest.
  • Compact, rounded head is easy to maintain with light pruning.
  • Excellent for elegant patio containers, entrances and sheltered garden spaces.

Growing Guide

Position

Grow in partial shade or full shade in a sheltered location, protected from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds. This helps maintain healthy foliage colour and reduces the risk of leaf scorch.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes and water during prolonged dry spells. Container-grown specimens should be watered whenever the compost begins to dry, ensuring excess water drains away freely.

Soil

Plant in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Skimmias thrive in acidic to neutral conditions. Where garden soils are alkaline or lime-rich, grow in a container filled with ericaceous compost for best results.

Hardiness and Winter Care

This is a hardy evergreen shrub suited to Irish gardens. In exposed locations, protect from cold, drying winds, particularly during severe winter weather. Container-grown plants may benefit from extra insulation around the pot during prolonged frosts.

Routine Care

Very little pruning is required. Remove damaged or misplaced shoots and lightly trim after flowering if needed to maintain the rounded crown. Remove any shoots developing below the head to preserve the clear stem.

Perfect For

  • Statement patio containers
  • Entranceways and front doors
  • Courtyard gardens
  • Woodland-style planting
  • Formal and contemporary garden designs
