Overview

Spiraea japonica 'Goldflame' is a colourful deciduous shrub that offers interest from spring through autumn. Fresh new growth emerges in rich bronze and golden-orange shades before maturing to bright yellow-green, while flat clusters of rosy-pink flowers appear throughout summer, creating an attractive contrast against the foliage.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in full sun for the brightest foliage colour and best flowering, although it will also perform well in partial shade.

Soil

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil. Once established, 'Goldflame' is adaptable to a wide range of garden soils provided they do not remain waterlogged.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season. Established plants require little additional watering except during prolonged dry periods, particularly when grown in containers.

Wildlife

The nectar-rich summer flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, making this a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly planting schemes.

Pruning

Cut stems back hard in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Removing spent flower heads after the first flush may encourage further flowering later in the season.
