Overview

Taxus baccata, commonly known as English Yew, is one of the finest evergreen conifers for topiary. Expertly trained into a striking spiral, this specimen provides instant architectural impact with its dense, dark green foliage and refined, timeless appearance. Its naturally compact growth and excellent response to clipping allow the spiral to retain its crisp outline with minimal maintenance.

Ideal for framing entrances, lining driveways, enhancing courtyards or creating focal points in formal gardens, this classic topiary offers dependable structure and colour throughout the year. Its adaptability to a wide range of garden conditions and exceptional longevity make it a valuable long-term investment for both traditional and contemporary landscapes.

Why We Love It

  • Expertly trained spiral creates an immediate architectural focal point.
  • Dense evergreen foliage provides colour and structure throughout every season.
  • Exceptionally tolerant of clipping, allowing the shape to be maintained for many years.

  • Suitable for both formal and contemporary garden designs.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in full sun or partial shade. English Yew performs well in both sheltered and moderately exposed locations, making it suitable for a wide variety of garden settings.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, additional watering is usually only needed during prolonged dry spells. Container-grown specimens should be checked more frequently during warm weather.

Soil

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Although tolerant of many soil types, avoid sites that remain persistently waterlogged, particularly during winter.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Very hardy throughout Ireland and requires no routine winter protection once established. Applying a mulch around the base each spring helps conserve moisture and improve soil structure while keeping mulch clear of the trunk.

Routine Care

Trim once or twice during the growing season to maintain the crisp spiral outline. Remove any shoots that spoil the shape, together with any dead, damaged or crossing branches. Yew responds exceptionally well to careful pruning.

Perfect For

  • Framing front doors and grand entrances.
  • Formal gardens and parterre planting.
  • Courtyards, terraces and large patio containers.
  • Driveways and avenue planting.
  • Creating permanent architectural focal points.

Good to Know

The supplied height of approximately 240cm refers to the plant at the time of sale and not its eventual size. Although Taxus baccata grows into a large tree if left unclipped, regularly maintained topiary retains its elegant spiral form for many years. All parts of the plant, except the fleshy red aril surrounding the seed, are poisonous if ingested.
