About this product

Thuja plicata 'Whipcord' – Supplied in a C7.5 Pot, Approximately 70 cm Tall

Plant Highlights: Distinctive cord-like evergreen foliage • Graceful, cascading habit • Year-round architectural interest • Excellent for containers and specimen planting • Low-maintenance once established

Overview

Thuja plicata 'Whipcord' is an unusual evergreen conifer prized for its unique, rope-like foliage that hangs gracefully from a compact, rounded centre. Unlike more traditional upright conifers, its softly cascading branches create a sculptural effect that brings texture and movement to the garden throughout the year.

The rich green foliage develops attractive bronze tones during colder weather, adding seasonal interest without losing its evergreen appeal. Its distinctive form makes it an excellent feature plant for patio containers, gravel gardens, mixed borders or as a focal point in contemporary planting schemes.

Growing Guide

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It performs best where the soil remains evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly during the first growing season and during prolonged dry spells, particularly if grown in a container.

Apply a mulch around the base in spring to help conserve soil moisture and keep the roots cool, taking care not to pile mulch against the stem.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required. Remove any dead or damaged shoots as needed and allow the plant to develop its naturally elegant, cascading form. Avoid heavy trimming, as this can spoil its distinctive shape.

Why We Love It

'Whipcord' offers a completely different look from most conifers. Its flowing, cord-like foliage provides year-round texture and makes a striking contrast with broad-leaved shrubs, ornamental grasses and flowering perennials.
