Overview

Thyme is a versatile, aromatic perennial herb valued for both its culinary use and ornamental appeal. Its small, highly fragrant leaves can be harvested throughout the growing season to flavour a wide range of savoury dishes, while the neat, compact habit makes it an attractive addition to herb gardens, raised beds and patio containers. As this product is supplied as a mixed Thymus selection, foliage appearance and growth habit may vary slightly.

During late spring and summer, thyme produces clusters of tiny nectar-rich flowers that attract bees and other beneficial pollinating insects. Evergreen or semi-evergreen in mild conditions, it provides year-round texture and fragrance while remaining easy to grow in sunny, free-draining positions.

Why We Love It

  • Aromatic foliage can be harvested regularly for cooking.

  • Compact habit is ideal for containers and small gardens.

  • Flowers provide an excellent food source for pollinators.

  • Evergreen foliage offers year-round interest.

  • Easy to grow and drought tolerant once established.

Growing Guide

Position

Plant in a sunny, open position where it receives plenty of direct sunlight. Thyme performs best in warm, well-ventilated locations and is ideal for herb gardens, raised beds and containers.

Watering

Water regularly while establishing. Once established, thyme is drought tolerant and generally only requires watering during prolonged dry spells. Container-grown plants should be watered when the compost begins to dry.

Soil

Grow in free-draining soil. Avoid heavy or waterlogged ground, particularly during winter. Incorporating horticultural grit into heavier soils will improve drainage and encourage healthy growth.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Suitable for year-round outdoor cultivation in most Irish gardens. Good drainage is essential during winter to help prevent root problems in cold, wet conditions.

Routine Care

Harvest little and often to encourage fresh growth. Lightly trim plants after flowering to maintain a compact shape and prevent them from becoming woody. Avoid cutting back into old, leafless stems.

Perfect For

  • Kitchen and herb gardens.

  • Raised vegetable beds.

  • Patio containers.

  • Gravel and Mediterranean-style gardens.

  • Pollinator-friendly planting.
