About this product

Viburnum tinus 'Spirit'

Viburnum tinus 'Spirit'

Confirmed Format: 5L Container

Plant Highlights: Evergreen foliage • Winter flowers • Pink buds opening to white blooms • Wildlife friendly • Ideal for hedging and borders

Overview

Viburnum tinus 'Spirit', commonly known as Laurustinus, is a compact evergreen shrub valued for providing colour and structure when little else is flowering. From late autumn through spring, clusters of rich pink flower buds gradually open into lightly scented, star-shaped white flowers, creating a long-lasting display from approximately November to May. Glossy, dark green foliage provides year-round interest, while metallic blue-black berries may follow the flowers when pollination occurs, adding seasonal appeal and attracting birds.

Its naturally dense, bushy habit makes it an excellent choice for mixed shrub borders, low informal hedging, screening or as a feature in large patio containers. Mature plants typically reach around 1.5–2m in height and spread, making it suitable for both smaller and medium-sized gardens.

Why We Love It

  • Flowers through the colder months when many other shrubs are dormant.

  • Attractive deep pink buds provide colour before the flowers even open.

  • Dense evergreen foliage offers year-round structure and screening.

  • Metallic blue-black berries provide additional seasonal interest and can benefit garden wildlife.

  • Easy to grow and requires very little routine maintenance once established.

Growing Guide

Position

Grow in full sun or partial shade. It performs well in sheltered or reasonably exposed gardens and is suitable for coastal areas where conditions are not excessively harsh.

Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season while the shrub establishes. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant, although plants in containers should be checked more frequently during warm, dry weather.

Soil

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. It adapts well to clay, loam or sandy soils provided drainage is good. Improve heavy soils with organic matter before planting, and use a quality shrub or multi-purpose compost for container-grown plants.

Hardiness and Winter Care

Well suited to Irish gardens, this evergreen shrub remains attractive throughout winter. Avoid prolonged waterlogging during the colder months, particularly in heavier soils or containers.

Routine Care

Very little pruning is required. To maintain shape or reduce size, trim lightly in late spring after flowering has finished. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Perfect For

  • Mixed shrub borders with year-round structure.

  • Low informal hedging and boundary planting.

  • Evergreen screening in smaller gardens.

  • Large patio containers.

  • Wildlife-friendly gardens with winter interest.

Good to Know

The attractive metallic blue-black berries develop after flowering when pollination has occurred, so berry production may vary depending on growing conditions and the presence of compatible pollinating insects.
