Westland Bulb Planting & Potting Peat Free Mix 10L is a specialist peat-free compost formulated to give bulbs the free-draining growing conditions and balanced nutrition they need for strong, healthy growth. Suitable for planting bulbs indoors or outdoors, it can be used in pots and containers as well as for bulb planting in garden beds and borders.

The mix combines added grit for improved drainage with a balanced supply of essential nutrients and trace elements. Westland also adds its zinc complex to support plant health and resilience, while the specialist formulation encourages strong root development, abundant flowers and healthy foliage.

How to Use

Before Planting

Rework the compost gently between your hands before use to help it regain its intended texture.

Planting Bulbs Outdoors

1. Dig a planting hole approximately 10–15cm (4–6in) deep and add a layer of the bulb planting mix.

2. Position the bulb firmly in the compost with its shoot facing upwards.

3. Cover with compost, leaving the shoot visible where appropriate.

4. Firm gently and water thoroughly.

5. Feed regularly after flowering.

Always take the individual bulb's recommended planting depth and spacing into account.

Planting Bulbs Indoors

1. Half-fill the chosen container with the planting mix.

2. Position the bulbs firmly in the compost with their shoots facing upwards.

3. Cover with compost while leaving the shoots visible.

4. Firm gently, water and place the container in a dark, cold and airy position.

5. Water as necessary.

6. When shoots reach approximately 2.5–5cm (1–2in) high, move the container to a light, cool position. Once the shoots are fully green, move it to a warmer location.

After Flowering

Once the foliage has completely died back after flowering, bulbs being lifted for storage can be dried and kept in a cool, dry, frost-free location.

Composition & Growing Performance

The formulation includes added grit to create the free-draining environment that bulbs favour. This helps maintain an open root zone while supporting robust root development.

A balanced feed containing essential nutrients and trace elements supports flowering and healthy foliage. The added zinc complex is designed to support plant resilience. Zinc also plays a role in auxin production and contributes to the movement of water and nutrients through the plant, root and shoot development and photosynthesis.

Good to Know

This specialist mix is not suitable for ericaceous or lime-hating plants. Westland also does not recommend it as a growing medium for raised beds.

Although it can be used for houseplants, Westland recommends choosing a dedicated houseplant potting mix for better results when potting general indoor plants.

Handling & Storage

Wear gloves when handling compost and wash your hands after use. Reseal the bag after opening and store it in a dry, frost-free place away from weedkillers and other garden chemicals.
