Overview

Wisteria floribunda 'Alba', the white-flowered Japanese Wisteria, is a deciduous climber renowned for its long, pendulous racemes of fragrant white flowers that appear in late spring to early summer. The blooms are carried in graceful hanging clusters, creating a spectacular display on pergolas, arches and sunny walls. As the plant matures, its twining stems develop into an impressive framework, while the fresh green foliage provides attractive cover throughout the growing season before turning yellow in autumn.

Why We Love It

The pure white flower racemes of 'Alba' offer a refined alternative to the more familiar lilac wisterias. Its elegant cascading flowers create a memorable display each spring and bring lasting character to garden structures.

Growing Guide

Position & Support Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in a sunny position for best flowering, though partial shade is also suitable. Provide a strong support such as a pergola, arch or sturdy wall-mounted wires, as mature plants become heavy over time.
Watering Water regularly while establishing, particularly during dry spells.
Pruning Prune twice each year—once in summer to shorten the current season's long shoots and again in late winter to encourage the formation of flowering spurs and maintain a tidy framework.

  • Pergolas, arches and trellises
  • Sunny or partially shaded walls
  • Creating a fragrant spring feature

Good to Know
